"The Downfall of Paris" ~Traditional
When performing this solo you have some choices to make...
Tempo - as far as rudimental drummers are concerned a tempo of 110 bpm is 'ancient' and 120 bpm is 'modern'. This traditional piece falls into the ancient category. However, in the 18th century (when the notation for this piece first starts to show up) march tempo's for parade were between 80-92bpm, give or take. My recording is around 105bpm; I think it's a good tempo to shoot for if you're say, a middle school student working on this piece. Phrasing and style may have some slight variations depending on what you decide your performance tempo to be.
Sticking - The Pratt, Schinstine, Moore, book gives you sticking options. I address this in the movie so check it out. I did forget to mention however the the RRR LLL sticking is also significant because of it's tradition. If you ever find yourself in a group of rudimental drummers about to throw down on some 'Downfall' chances are everyone is using RRR LLL.
At the end of the day you should play this piece with a tempo and sticking that works well for where you are in your development. However it's important to know these historical snippets if you want to play with some historical integrity. O, and don't forget the fife melody is based on an 18th century folk song (dance tune) so have some fun with it and try practicing with a groovy song of your liking (I use "Come On With It" by: Tower Of Power).
